Q&A: Fredericton eco artist releases her first children’s book ‘The Green Guardian & the EcoSquad’
Age?
61.
Provenance?
I was born and raised in the rural setting of Salmon Creek. After travelling and working on the West Coast, missing my family and East Coast roots, I returned in 1974 and am living in Fredericton.
Why eco art?
Eco art holds a great purpose for me, it has become an extension of my daily life. I find it difficult to throw ‘stuff’ away that I can repurpose into a unique piece of eco art and give it a second chance – a brand new eco heartbeat with a very important green message. It is my way of reducing my ecological carbon footprint. I believe it makes a difference in peoples lives when they see my eco art and realize what it is made from. They are immediately called to action and want to make their very own piece of eco art. It reminds me of growing up as a child and we would make so many things out of what we had on the farm – homemade, handmade fun.
What was your breakthrough moment?
When my patio table blew over and smashed into thousands of pieces. It was the most beautiful green colour and just too pretty to throw out. I was working on a painting at the time and it happened to be green. The energy efficient light bulb went on and I thought ‘Why not put that glass in my painting?’So began my passion for eco art. What would you be if you weren’t in the arts? If I didn’t have the ability to create and express my feelings and thoughts through music, on canvas or paper, I would be empty.
We liked the art, because it inspires children
We liked that you used eco materials to match the theme of the book to send out a positive message
We liked how each squad had a saying about the Earth and pollution and how to stop all the world issues, to give the kids ideas to help save the Earth.
We liked how it talks about the real animal the guardian is based on,to give the kids an idea of what the animal resembles.
We liked how each squad introduces themselves so they know what part they play in the group
Marisa, age 13 and Kelsey, age 11
I thought Sheilas Eco Art session was very reflective of 21st century learning, hands on for busy learners and eco friendly for those who want to help recycle. All in all, it was inspiring and fantastic.Promotes reducing, reusing, recycling. I am sure the kids would love to sign up for the after school program.
